Yesterday when the news hit that conservative commentator Andrew Breitbart had died at the age of 43, many people were upset at the tone of some of the comments being written about him. Some people repeated the old adage that it is not right to speak ill of the dead. I don't personally hold that viewpoint - I was always taught that if people want to be spoken well of after they die, they need to earn their praise while they are alive. Nobody would seriously suggest, for example, that we should speak well of the 9/11 terrorists, Hitler, Stalin, Jeffrey Dahmer, Bernie Madoff, or anyone else that harmed people or made a living off of exploiting others. This fear of speaking ill of the dead likely comes from old pagan superstitions about spirits that I do not believe in. However, in the interest of respecting the wishes of one group while honoring another group's right to speak freely, I am offering the chance for people to eulogize a person who has made his living speaking very ill - not of the dead, but of the living - especially about women. This person spews some of the most vile misogynistic rhetoric that I've ever come across. This person is, of course, Rush Limbaugh, who recently called a woman a slut and a prostitute for the "crime" of wanting to use birth control.
Please feel free to speak your mind about Rush Limbaugh now, while he is still alive and there are no superstitious restrictions on speaking the truth. Let us know how you will remember Rush Limbaugh when he departs this earth.
